The concept of essential medicines was pioneered by the WORLD
HEALTH ORGANIZATION (WHO) in 1977 with the introduction of the
first essential medicines list.
Essential medicines are those that satisfy the basic health care needs
ofthe populationofthe country,especially in rural area.
The WHO EML (Essential Medicine List) has gained widespread
acceptance among nations with 4 out of 5 countries having adopted a
national list based on the WHO EML. The list is now considered a
cornerstone of national medicine policies. Some countries have
provincial or state lists, in addition to the national list.
The concept of essential medicines has also been adopted by many
international organizations, such as United Children's Funds (UNICEF),
Office of the United Nation High Commissioner for Refugees
(UNHCR).The CMS-ED programme based on WHO's Essential Drugs for
Primary Health Care.
